In 2005 the
Muskingum County Jail processed over 5,900 inmates. The average daily
population for this Jail alone is 163 inmates. The Work Release Center,
an extension of the Jail, processed over 600 inmates, and has an average
daily population of 32 inmates.
Along with prisoners from Muskingum County, we also house inmates from
surrounding counties whose jails have met their limit.
Being a full service jail requires us to provide many programs and activities for inmates. Some of these are: Alcohol and Drug Counseling, Anger management, Parenting Plus, G.E.D. education, full medical and psychological services, laundry, library and commissary services. Bible study and religious counseling are available as well. Inmates are provided with recreational periods, television and table games. Additional programs are Work Release, Community Service projects and Life Skills training.
Prisoners confined in the jail include those charged with every type of criminal offense from the most minor traffic charge to the most serious felony. These include prisoners awaiting trial or sentencing, transfer to a state institution, fugitives awaiting return to other states, and those inmates awaiting probation or parole revocations. Also confined in the jail are those persons committed by any of the counties’ three municipal courts, Common Pleas Courts and Domestic Relations Courts.
