School Resource Officers
The Sheriff’s Office has five School Resource Officers (SROs), each assigned to different school districts throughout the county. Each SRO is a sworn Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office. Our current School Resource Officers, and the districts they are assigned are listed below. Please feel free to contact these individuals at (740) 452-3637 ext. 105.
Deputy Nicole Brown
Deputy Brown joined the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office, Corrections Division in 1997. She was transferred to the Patrol Division in 2007. Deputy Brown has been a School Resource Officer for West Muskingum Local School District and Tri-Valley Local School District. Currently, Deputy Brown is the School Resource Officer for Maysville Preschool and Maysville Elementary.
Deputy Brad Gearhart
Tri-Valley High School
Deputy Gearhart joined the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office in 2004. Since 2016, Deputy Gearhart has been the School Resource Officer for Tri-Valley Local School District.
Deputy John Howe
Maysville High School
In 2004, Deputy Howe completed the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy at Zane State College and gained employment with Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office, Corrections Division as a Deputy in the Muskingum County Jail. Deputy Howe was promoted to Road Division in 2005.
Deputy Howe’s first School Resource Officer position was with Foxfire Schools where he enjoyed talking to students about law enforcement and laws of Ohio. Currently, Deputy Howe is the SRO at Maysville High school where he is proactive with athletics and The Maria Tiberi Foundation, Distracted Driving Program. He is also active with Zanesville Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Badges for Baseball. Deputy Howe says, “The greatest part about his job is watching the young kids stride to grow into young adults and become very productive citizens in our society.” Howe is extremely proud of his two daughters whom both are in college; Kailee Howe and Mackenzie Howe.
Deputy Tom Joseph
Foxfire High School
Deputy Joseph joined the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 as a Corrections Officer in the Jail. He was transferred to the Patrol Division in 1999. Deputy Joseph is the School Resource Officer for Foxfire High School.
Deputy Chris Merry
Mid East and Philo High School
Deputy Chris Merry started with the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office in 2002. In 2003, he became a member of the Special Response Team (SRT) and in 2007 became a School Resource Officer (SRO). Deputy Merry has been a SRO for John Glenn, Tri-Valley, and Maysville and is currently working the SRO for Mid East and Philo. Deputy Merry has coached John Glenn Football and Track since 2006 and in 2014 became a SADD Advisor (Students Against Destructive Decisions) at Philo.
