Message From Sheriff Matt Lutz
Dear Muskingum County,
As Sheriff of Muskingum County, I would like to welcome you to the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office website. It is my hope that our website will be a useful resource for the citizens of Muskingum County.
It has been an honor to serve as Muskingum County Sheriff. The office of Sheriff is unique, as it is the only elected law enforcement official in the State of Ohio. The Sheriff is elected/re-elected every four years allowing the Sheriff, their record and the way in which he/she operates their office to be accountable to the citizens and the voters of the county. It is the only remaining law enforcement position in the United States which is filled through the electoral process.
The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office provides enforcement and investigative services to our citizens through our deputies assigned to our patrol division. Our general case detectives are responsible for investigating serious felony crimes. We partner with the Zanesville Police Department to provide drug enforcement. We are also a member of the Central Ohio Drug Task Force that provides additional resources for these drug investigations. We operate a full-service jail, as well as the primary dispatch center in the county that provides 911 service and dispatching for all county law enforcement, volunteer Fire and EMS Departments. Our office also provides courthouse security and security in our school districts. We currently have 11 School Resource Officers in the county’s 5 school districts, the Mid-East Career Center and Zane State College/OUZ Campus. We also provide a deputy for the Zanesville City School District’s building that is out in the county. Our professional clerical staff serves our citizens through reports, background checks, CCW permits, sheriff’s sales and subpoenas.
In addition, our deputies serve in secondary roles including the Special Response Team which handles major violent situations, our K-9 Officers and those working extra duty in the county providing security to different functions.
With all of these services, it is vitally important that we provide our personnel with the best equipment possible to make sure they can do their job. We are constantly securing funds to improve and maintain the equipment. We are always facing the challenges of increasing needs while being mindful when spending tax dollars. With the support of our commissioners, we have been able to provide and maintain the needed equipment so that we can provide the best service to our citizens.
Whether it is our communications officer answering your call, a deputy responding to your complaint or a detective solving your crime, it will always be our goal to make Muskingum County a safe place to live, work and raise a family.
